Every Thursday at the university of Yaoundé 1 campus is set aside for cleaning the surroundings. On this day, vendors and traders using the school’s space, clean the environment from 7am to 10am.
When the tidying up begins, every shop is locked, and every Individual is involved in the activity.
Each group of persons work under the supervision of a captain who himself is a business owner on campus. He is actively involved in the cleaning and after that, he conducts roll call.
The captains are directly answerable to the school administration.
In an interview conducted with “Uncle Willy” a documentation manger in the campus based at the faculty of Arts, he said that “cleaning takes place every Thursday and everybody who does business on campus here is involved.
Anybody who dares not partake in this activity will be sanctioned for two weeks and his shop locked. He or she doesn’t sell or makes any effort to compensate the school authorities.
Each section has a captain and I am the captain for the FALSH section. As for me, I can’t afford to miss this exercise because this documentation is my only source of income, I am a family man and you well know how things are these days”.
According to Uncle Willy, Jeudi Propre should be taken very seriously so as to avoid problems with the school authorities.
The whole campus is cleaned starting from Cité Universitaire to Chateau the main gates leading into the campus.
Some of the sections include: Cite U, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Science, the Rectorate and campus entrances.
This exercise doesn’t exclude those selling around the science Faculty which is adjacent to ASMAC as the school is found inside the Ngoa Ekelle campus.
Anyone who refuses to work, is sanctioned for two weeks by the school aithorities.
