Ngo Mbey Grace student of journalism II at the Advanced School of Mass Communication (ASMAC),is editor in chief of the weekly publication L’Etudiant. The newspaper which was first published on Monday 27th May 2019, focuses on the happenings in ASMAC.
237campus.com met with the Editor in Chief to talk about her position and future plans for the student’s newspaper.
After the first publication, what are your impressions?
Satisfied. Even though it is true that for a very first edition every aspect cannot be perfect, I am surprised at the hard work put in by the journalism one students. But I’m counting on the experience gotten from my second year to work with them. A few things have to be corrected. For example deadlines were not really respected because up till Saturday 25th some articles had not yet reached the editors.
How is the newsroom of L’Etudiant managed?
After the first edition, the different desks won’t be created for now, but sometime later it would be done, based on the output of the journalist. We have to observe and see the quality of writing and like I earlier mentioned a few things are still to be corrected.
How do you intend to keep L’Etudiant newspaper at the center?
For every newsroom to succeed it’s reporters have to be discipline, follow instructions given at the news conference, as per reporting respect subtitles and lead when filing in their report. Reporters have to be present at every news conference and those who aren’t will be sanctioned. Every reporter has to participate, punctuality from every perspective including writing. As for the paper we intend to work on the page layout making it more digestive, the text has to be easy to understand, inverted pyramid which is key in journalistic reporting is to be respected, reports will be captivating and more engaging. Topics treated will be simple and basic for now. Every journalist has to participate at the editing because it will help improve their writing.
Any plans of integrating those of the senior class?
Definitely, I’m not saying those in the first year are not up to the task but those of the second and third year have more experience than they do . And for our newspaper to succeed we need more maturity therefore including them will be bringing more know how.
Every media has an editorial policy, what is L’Etudiant’s own policy?
Yes, that will be quite simple “we aren’t for or against the administration of ASMAC”. We are interested in knowing about the students of ASMAC and how he/she is in their various environment.
Any last words?
My responsibility to lead the team will be a daunting task but I intend to invite other fields like the advertisers, corporate communicators to come in and let’s make L’Etudiant a newspaper with a difference and that which will last even after our departure.
